And, a Merry Christmas to you, too.

Cue Christmas Time is Here by Vince Guaraldi …

I am a Christian. I love Jesus. He is my Savior. And, I go to an incredible church with great friends every Sunday (shout out to all my Mariners and Greenwood Community Church friends!). But, I don’t have a problem with people telling me Happy Holidays. Because they are!

I start listening to Christmas music in mid-November, I watch Christmas movies as soon as the Hallmark Channel starts showing them, and no Christmas is complete until I’ve seen White Christmas and A Charlie Brown Christmas.

I shop at Target and I celebrate the whole Holiday Season. Thanksgiving, Kwanzaa, Hanukkah, Christmas, and New Year’s Eve (and Day). I will brave the cold Christmas Parade in downtown Denver and the newly-enjoyed Christmas Boat Parade in Newport Beach Harbor from the warmth of a house with the windows open and the boats a stones-throw away on Lido Isle.

Which brings me to my point. “Keep Christ in Christmas”. I don’t see any sign where He isn’t. In fact, I think the people that post “Keep Christ in Christmas” on their Facebook pages – especially those that put it in ALL CAPS (which is the electronic version of shouting) – have missed the point.

As a Christian, I wonder if God is thinking, “I didn’t sacrifice my Son for My followers to be shouting their devotion to Me from their Facebook posts.” The father in me thinks “the reason for the season” is Love. Just like I love my children, it’s not reserved for one or even mine, for that matter. It’s a love that is for everyone. It’s a universal love. Intended for everyone whether they say Merry Christmas or Happy Holidays.

One of my favorite parts from A Charlie Brown Christmas is when Charlie Brown realizes he does not have to let commercialism ruin his Christmas. With a newly found sense of inspiration, he quietly picks up the little tree and walks out of the auditorium, intending to take the tree home to decorate and show the others it will work in the play.

Christmas isn’t a “thing”. It’s not even a season. It’s a gift. It’s a gift of love. So when someone says Happy Holiday, Joyous Kwanzaa, Happy Hanukkah, or Merry Christmas, thank them and know you are blessing them with the real message of Christmas. Love.

Resuming our movie … Linus quietly says he can tell Charlie Brown what Christmas is about and walks to center stage to make his point. Under a spotlight, Linus quotes the second chapter of the Gospel according to Luke, verses 8 through 14 from the King James Version. “‘8And there were in the same country shepherds abiding in the field, keeping watch over their flock by night. 9And, lo, the angel of the Lord came upon them, and the glory of the Lord shone round about them: and they were sore afraid. 10And the angel said unto them, Fear not (tip of the hat to Kenton Beshore): for, behold, I bring you tidings of great joy, which shall be to all people. 11For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Savior, which is Christ the Lord. 12And this shall be a sign unto you; Ye shall find the babe wrapped in swaddling clothes, lying in a manger. 13And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host praising God, and saying, 14Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace and goodwill towards men.’”

“…And that’s what Christmas is all about, Charlie Brown.”

On earth, peace and goodwill towards (all) men.

Roll credits …..

Happy Birthday to Me!

Cowboy Up! Part 3

Brace yourself. This one isn’t short. So, pour a cup of coffee and settle in for a little ride with me.

Two years ago, I wrote a blog on my birthday. This year, I decided to write one on the last day of my birth year. Kind of an introspective look back and forward from a guy who not only has grey hairs around the temple, but a beard chock full of grey and needs glasses to read anything.

In the last two years, I believe I have lived every bit of my admonition to all of us. I’ve kissed and marveled on babies, loved deeply on my friends, and, yes, I’ve even eaten more than my share of ice cream. Banana Splits are still my favorite. Although, the salted caramel mocha frappachino at Starbucks has become a close second. It has enough calories to choke a horse!

The last two years have been amazing. The first year was spent recuperating from my divorce. To be very transparent, I was a total mess. I had found myself sitting on my butt in the mud wondering how in the world I had gotten into such a mess. As with everything else, I did it with verve. So, I knew I needed equal élan to spend my 50th year getting myself out of the mud, determine where in the world I wanted to go, and what that person looked like and acted like to get there.

I spent my 51st year trying on this “new” person and my last step was the “where”. So, as I sit here today on the eve of my 52nd birthday, that place is in the sunny clime of Southern California, specifically Orange County and right this moment at a great little Starbucks on the corner of Jamboree and Bristol in Newport Beach.

A bit of background on why I chose this area is relevant to my story. Many of you know I planned on moving to LA upon graduation from college. My father’s cancer and life postponed that move. “OC”, as it called by locals (not “The OC” as it is called by the television show and referenced in a few movies), is roughly the same size as the Denver Metro area. Los Angeles is more than four times that size and is, in my estimation, crowded and less desirable than the open areas of OC where you can hike a mountain and swim in the ocean in the same day. Most importantly, my “little ones”, Kennedy and Jackson, live in Huntington Beach and “the boys”, Connor and Ryan, love coming here to, in addition to seeing me, go to the beach; something I do at least weekly.

Back to my year. I started it here. In fact, I flew into John Wayne Airport on my birthday and celebrated it with new-found friends at the Capital Grille in Costa Mesa. I spent most of December, January, March, and April here before finally “burning the boats” in August and moving here lock, stock, and barrel. I sold my condo, stored what wouldn’t fit in my appropriately-named Chevy Malibu and took off without a friend in OC or even a place to stay.

Along the way, I was in Denver sporadically and spent May into August in St. Louis; an experience I thoroughly enjoyed. The Southwestern Consulting crews of Kansas City and St. Louis became extremely close friends through an interesting time enjoying everything and everyone in St. Louis. Weekends were filled with wine tastings and winery visits, party cove on Lake St. Louis, dancing in Chesterfield and the surrounding areas, Cardinals games and the Arch, outdoor concerts at the Botanic Gardens and the Shakespeare Festival in Forest Park, Downtown St. Charles, biscuits & gravy at JJ’s and the many places and churches Jay Jones and I visited. St. Louis will always have a dear place in my heart.

This year brought about a deeper deliberation of my faith, I fell in love twice bringing a renewed faith that it can happen again, and a confirmation of OC being where I belong for the foreseeable future.

I have hiked in the mountains, played in the ocean, stood on the corner of Hollywood and Vine, re-connected with college friends in LA, I’m still wearing shorts and t-shirts in the winter, and I’ve met a lot of really great people through my wandering around OC and involvement at Mariners Church. The people at Mariners welcomed me into their community and gave me a group with whom to enjoy Halloween and celebrate Thanksgiving. I use the word, given, intentionally, as it has been a gift. My involvement with the singles group, Velocity, the men’s ministry, softball team and mentor program has been and continues to be very rewarding.

In short, on this last day before I turn 52, I’m re-building my life and community in OC, much like I did in Colorado from Arkansas. I will find the theatres, concerts, and Starbucks meetings that I have always enjoyed. And I think I will add deep-sea fishing, whale watches, surfing, mud runs and obstacle courses, and I may finally sky-dive.

Reiterating the admonition to kiss babies, love on friends, and eat more ice cream, I’m adding make new friends, take more chances, and experience more of your surroundings.

I know I will.

Cowboy Up!

One last note. The Meeting Dude is back! After being a very poor blogger in the last year – most of my posts were through Facebook – I plan to look for, meet, and write about all the interesting and unusual people and places in my new community. I will also, on occasion, blog about things that are on my mind as an outlet to share with you and a challenge to put some of them into action.

Stay tuned to my posts on Facebook, as well, for pictures and posts of all the things and people I’ll be enjoying.

Make Love, Not War. Peace!

January 28, 2011

I’m going to add a new twist to my blog. Due to travel and time demands, I just don’t have a lot of time to interview the interesting people I meet. What I do have is a fair amount of time in airports, cabs, or driving that allows my little brain to ponder [...]

The Girl in the Red Dress

October 6, 2010

I was going to call this post, “The Battle of the Sexes” until tonight. I’ll describe the change later.
I posted an opinion on Facebook earlier this year. It was based on a “conversation” between a little girl and boy that were playing outside my window. The post was “Women/Girls must be the [...]

My Connections

July 15, 2010

Facebook. Twitter. Blogs. LinkedIn. Networking is the biggest game in town these days. People brag about (or shake their head at) how many “Friends” they have or how many people are following their tweets. But, what is missing so often with those that post huge numbers of friends or [...]

Spending time with my favorite author.

June 18, 2010

Harlan Coben is easily my favorite author. I’ve read everything he’s written and am always waiting for his next publication.
Harlan spoke about his latest book, Caught, at a recent Tattered Cover book signing. He also shared about his life and how he gets his inspiration for a book. Mostly, he writes about [...]

“Mrs. Robinson, you’re trying to seduce me.”

March 11, 2010

Other than Dustin Hoffman in this famous role, how many men get to say that?!? I had the honor of joining the actress playing Mrs. Robinson for a cup of coffee recently. If you don’t get to hear those words coming from Anne Bancroft, Tracy Shaffer is the next best thing. Maybe [...]

Hug a friend. Heck, hug everyone!

February 1, 2010

I just attended my third funeral/memorial in just over six months. I would think that I must be getting of the age where you attend more funerals than weddings, if it wasn’t for the tragically young age at which these three people have left our physical presence.
As many of you have read in my [...]

Happy Counts!

January 25, 2010

I’ve mentioned in previous postings about the value of friends and family (see September 6 blog). Family has several variations; all of which I enjoy. I have a real-life brother, Bob (I posted about his son’s wedding on August 3). I also have friends that I affectionately call “Brother” because of some [...]

The Meeting Dude turned 50 today. Actually, the Meeting Dude is just a baby. Jim Phillips (aka The Meeting Dude) turned 50 today. It’s only half over and it has already been an overwhelming day.
I received a few emails, text messages, and Mom even mailed her card in advance as she is [...]
